The emotions are dialed to 11 in the most entertaining (and Freudian) of Douglas Sirk’s legendary run of 1950’s technicolor melodramas. Tragic upheavals abound for a rich Texas oil family when their alcoholic son (Robert Stack) and his childhood best friend (Rock Hudson) fall for the same woman (Lauren Bacall). Written on the Wind also features a memorably perverse and Oscar-winning supporting performance from Dorothy Malone as Stack’s party-girl sister.
