Writer/producer/director Fassbinder made one of his most personal films even more so by starring in it as a carnival laborer who hits the lottery. Munich high society beckons in the form of a handsome scion, but questions of trust and greed soon arise. The cinematography is by Michael Ballhaus, revered for his collaborations with Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese. In his review, Roger Ebert praised Fassbinder for being “a specialist at scenes in which the unspeakable is spoken, the unthinkable is thought, the undoable is done with a vengeance.”
